I engage with many forms of social media such as Facebook, E-mail, text messaging and YouTube and various other sources.
Dance –
Whenever I am dancing, I am expressing my ideas through my creativity, which stems from literacy. Although dancing is mainly physical, a dancer engages with literacy quite often. Most ballet terms are in French and so a dancer will experience a new language while exploring the movement. I have been dancing for a while now and have engaged within the dance dynamical terminology and translating them to the different movements. Dancing is an activity in which a person must want to do it in order to become successful. Once someone has a love for a topic, they have a foundation interest and motivation to learn. Because of my love for dance, it is easy for me to want to learn about it and develop my abilities within Dance. More often than not, I will use it in my assignments to display more of my understanding of a subject because it is something I enjoy; I am breaking down my ideas into a more preferable way to myself and this is how I develop and enhance my literacy abilities.
Reading
Another source of literacy I engage in is reading; I am an avid reader. I will read academic pieces for my assignments and read informally on a daily basis. Reading has helped my literacy abilities excel, especially creatively. We use the abilities gained from a young age to communicate verbally and written in all forms with others. Reading develops my ability to communicate effectively with others and develop relationships within my community.
Social media – Facebook, Email, text messaging
Facebook
I engage in Facebook by posting various statuses and pictures of what happens throughout my day. This is engaging with literacy as I am voicing my opinions and communicating within 21st century multimodal devices (technology). I mainly use Facebook as a way to connect with my friends and family who live in other parts of the world. I also use the instant messaging application Facebook has to communicate with friends. It is a way that allows me to directly communicate with a particular person. I negotiate times of meeting with friends, plan parties or events, or just speak to friends who I am unable to physically see. The language used varies depending on whom I am communicating with.
Email
I use E-mail quite formally as I only use it for communication between my lecturers, my placement teacher and to businesses for inquiries. Sending E-mails is using and improving my literacy skills as my formal E-mails allow me to increase my abilities for further university life and as a professional teacher. Communicating via E-mail has taught me as well as allows me to practice the way certain phrases and such can be interpreted.
Text Messaging
My iPhone is quite a common sight among my many pieces of equipment on me. I use my phone to communicate with people verbally and non-verbally as I will message and call people constantly. Most of my text messages are informally written as I am mostly speaking with friends and family, which does not require that much structure. Text messaging allowed myself to communication structure and differences and to have the ability to respond effectively verbally and non-verbally. I am able to use the skills developed in different settings.
YouTube
When my brother and I were younger, we used to create YouTube videos for our family to view. We figured because they lived so far away, we would let them know events in our life without actually being there to show them. The process of these videos usually involved creating a script, which worked as a way to both use multimodal skills and literacy skills. Working with scripts allowed me to excel in other aspects of schooling such as my drama classes as I had done it before and it was a way to creatively express my ideas.
