Throughout my schooling history, I have been involved within some form of basic and extension English programs. I have always enjoyed English classes and exploring the different uses of texts. From a young age I have been at ACARA’s definition of the highest reading age. This has definitely influenced the way I engage with literacy and how I engage. If students believe there is a purpose to the work they are engaging in, they are more likely to strive and achieve.
At one point within my academic life, my literacy began to drop rather quickly. I was unable to write an assignment properly, the use of paragraphs or fluent writing was not a strong suit of mine. Not being able to communicate effectively and not interpret the different meanings within texts, it was quite a difficult task to do English activities.
I began reading again and engaging with the different uses of text and my grades increased; I loved reading again, I began meeting the required criteria and developed an understanding for literacy. The English language and an appreciation for it is a complex and true understanding for it. This is where “Hack-schooling” would have been an effective technique as if students are learning things they would like to do, it is likely they will further develop their abilities.
I was taught the various and confusing uses of different ways to use text and language. This has always been a huge help in my academic career in high school. I was in the more artistic and creative artistic classes in high school, which allowed me to explore different forms of literacy such as story telling and script writing. The script writing helped me when I created the YouTube videos for my family, as I was able to transfer the knowledge. The concept of hack-schooling allowed me to develop my ideas as it made me believe there was purpose to the material I was learning. Literacy always has the ability to transfer what you know to further and better your knowledge.
