Throughout this unit, my literacy abilities have developed in a more academic way. Not particularly in terms of academic writing, but more in terms of my understanding of literacy and how it may be used in other ways than simply how I read, write and comprehension of content. I view literacy as a way to be creative and interpret information through communication. Breaking down and seeing how I engage with literacy has given me an idea of how to teach as well as cultivate another person’s abilities.
Whilst teaching during my practical unit, I was able to gain a better understanding of how literacy capabilities are inspired and developed. Along with the techniques I learnt in ELA200 such as how play-based learning is more affective than simply giving work to students. Logan Laplante’s Ted Talk really inspired the way I view teaching literacy as well as other aspects across the board. For example, in a class that I tutor a few students in, their literacy abilities are lower than expected for their grade level; through different strategies and using the student’s ideas and meaning, the teacher and I have developed a routine for the students to gain a better understanding of the work. Their levels have increased tremendously and have proven that creativity and allowing students to make their own decisions about their work can develop abilities.
